Poker Bad Beat Jackpot Rules
'Bad beat' is a term that can mean having an outstanding chance of winning a bet, only to still lose. The term can be used in any form of gambling but is most commonly applied to poker. Many poker rooms offer a progressive jackpot for very unlikely bad beats. Various other rules are added to ensure that only surprising bad beats win. Below I present tables of bad beat probabilities, starting with the most liberal rules, and ending with the most stringent. The most stringent rules, the 'Bad Beat Type 3', are the most common, in my experience.
Following are the rules for a type 1 bad beat.
- Both the bad beat and winning hand must be the best possible combination of five cards. In cases where the same hand can be created multiple ways (for example player has AK and the board shows AAKKQ) the player's hole cards will take priority.
- Both the bad beat and winning hand must make use of both hole cards.
- A full house must be beaten by a four of a kind or higher.
Odds Of Poker Bad Beat
The rules for a type 2 bad beat are the same as type 1, plus any four of a kind, whether the bad beat hand or winning hand, must contain a pocket pair.
The rules for a type 3 bad beat are the same as type 2, plus a full house may not make use of a three of a kind entirely on the board.
In my experience, is the most common format for bad beat rules is type 3. The additional rule for type 3 makes very little difference, compared to type 2.
The following table shows the probability of each bad beat hand under all three types of rules. The table is based on a ten-player game in which nobody ever folds. The probabilities are for any pair of players meeting the qualifying rules. If you want to know YOUR probability of winning, you should divide the probability in the table by 10.

Once in a blue moon, a poker player could have the best hand he ever had such as quad tens or an 8-high straight flush and still lose. In many cases, this would be devastating not only to his psyche, but also to whatever percentage of his bankroll he had on the table at the time, because chances are he lost it all thinking that he had to have best hand. That is, unless that player was at a casino with a progressive bad beat jackpot.
Las Vegas has two major progressive bad beat jackpots. One is a $150,000-guaranteed jackpot at participating Station Casinos, which include Palace Station, Boulder Station, Texas Station, Santa Fe, Sunset Station, Red Rock Casino, and Green Valley Ranch. The player who loses with quad nines or better is awarded the set amount of $45,000, while the player with the winning hand is given $30,000. All players participating in a hold'em cash game in any of the casinos receive an equal share of the remaining jackpot and guaranteed at least $200.
Players in the bad beat hand must use both whole cards to qualify. Since it is progressive, the jackpot size grows every day it does not hit. Every Tuesday, the qualifications of a bad beat decrease.
The other major bad beat jackpot is at participating Harrah's properties, which are Paris, Flamingo, Rio, O'Shea's, Bally's, Harrah's, and Harrah's Laughlin. It starts at $50,000 and to qualify, a player must lose with quad tens or better. That player would receive 30 percent of the jackpot while the winner would get 20 percent. The remaining 50 percent is split between hold'em cash game players in all rooms.
For every $20,000 the jackpot increases, the bad beat hand is lowered. Once hit, the jackpot restarts at $50,000.
