how much RAM memory for new Mac 2017

the new iMac come with 8 to 64 Go. my main application for this iMac is Lightroom and photoshop and video in the future. how much memory is enough ?

8 to 16 GB. Although, if you are buying a 27-inch iMac, ordering the machine with 8 GB and adding 16 GB of third party RAM, for a total of 24 GB, might be cost-effective

However, I have bought with the minimum factory supplied RAM both times. Purchasing additional RAM from OWC is pretty cheap, and installation is a matter of minutes. If you get too much, all that happens is you're out an amount that I personally would consider modest compared to the cost of a new 27' iMac. YMMV.

I run both OSX and Windows and, horrors, actually monitor RAM usage rather than opine on the subject.

Sorry to say that OSX in my experience is significantly less efficient than Windows in RAM usage and automatically freeing up RAM even after files are closed.

Most users can live in 8gb of RAM, some will bump up against 16 gb and it is indeed possible to exceed 16 gb in OSX if you have ginormous files, like 50mp in 16 bits. I think if you bump up against 32 gb of RAM even in OSX you need to rethink your work flow.

The most RAM intensive task most people will do is something like merging large files as a panorama. The other day with only PS and Bridge open I merged 4 16 megapixel 16 bit images. That used up 91% of 16 gb RAM in OSX. However other times doing the same task < 80% of RAM was used. That illustrates what I mean about RAM efficiency in OSX--third party utilities to purge RAM caches can be useful. The same task in Windows used less than 50% of 16gb RAM (I just did it to generate the number).

Realize that simply having empty RAM does nothing to speed up anything. I vote for 16gb but its your call.

I would go for 32GB but that's just me. Max is 64GB which is nice but currently overkill.

Buy the system with 8GB (or maybe 16GB if 2x8GB DIMM) and upgrade with aftermarket RAM as necessary. 2x8GB will give you two slots to fill. Not sure if the 27' ships with 2x4GB or 1x8GB with the base model. It is impossible for anyone here to tell you exactly how much RAM to buy without seeing the files you work on and review Activity Monitor when in use.

Do you have to match the RAM sizes (e.g., if you buy Apple 8GG + 8GB do you need to put 8GB in the two open slots or can you put in two 16GBs) ?

I did. It appears the 27-inch models certainly are RAM upgradable and Apple even shows the process which looks like it would take all of a few minutes.

I would buy the top spec you can afford in the following order: a) CPU - really important in LR/PS - go for at least 8 cores (2017/8 iMac Pro version), but the more the merrier

b) GPU - depends on how many displays you are going to use -- and whether you are going to run GPU intensive apps -- I went for a pair of the top spec GPUs when I bought my MacPro and it is still working very well

c) RAM - min 16, but again I would go for the max

d) SSD -- get at least 2 TB SSD - you can add SSD/HDD/Raids later through T3

Your list is backward. An SSD boot drive should be the #1 priority simply to run the OS and application. It has been a necessity for at least the last couple iterations of OSX. Apple has been optimizing newer OSes for solid state. It will be even more important when APFS arrives in a few months. Hard disk boot drives may actually be slower under APFS than they ever were.

Lightroom and Photoshop eat up RAM. It should be priority number 2.

A dGPU can add to the smoothness of some develop modules in Lightroom, but it kind of depends. Some people have reported slower performance with GPU acceleration applied.

Huge, multi-core CPUs are largely irrelevant in Photoshop and Lightroom. They can hep in a very minor way when import, exporting, HDR-ing, and converting to DNG - the stuff we don't do very often, and can get a cup of coffee while its happening. Processors provide very little help in actually developing the photo. Photoshop and Lightroom cannot take advantage of hyperthreading. A relatively new CPU, a quad-core, is preferable, but in terms of the above list, processing power should be the last concern when specing a machine.

The short answer is yes, but only if you have a notebook or desktop.

A large majority of notebooks have 2 memory slots which can be upgraded with either one of two modules. Many of these are shipped with 2 low-density modules of matching capacity.

However when upgrading these types of notebooks you do not have to remove both modules and put in a matching pair. It is just as effective to keep 1 of the existing modules and replace the other one with a large capacity module.

Most desktops have a similar set up. They generally have 2 or 4 memory slots that are upgradeable. Many times they are shipped with a matching pair. However when upgrading you need only to add one module at a time regardless whether the device was shipped with 1 module or 2 originally. Your HP desktop will run quite happily with 3 modules assuming it has 4 or more memory slots.

I bought a W530 recently which came with 2x4Gb RAM. I have since bought an extra 2x8Gb RAM modules to upgrade. Upgrading the processor will void your iMac's warranty, and it's an involved process that many may not be comfortable with.
